Wild Cat by Jennifer Ashley

Wild Cat by Jennifer Ashley

Police detective Diego Escobar assists in what should be the simple task of arresting a trespasser, high in an unfinished skyscraper, and comes face-to-face with his first Shifter: the shockingly naked Cassidy Warden.  To protect the Feline beauty, he finds himself circumventing human laws...

Heartbroken from the death of her mate a year ago, Cassidy is tracking down his mysterious killer--one who could bring danger to all Shifters.  Now, this sexy cop rekindles the flames of her mating desire.  And once the fires begin, nothing and no one can put them out...

Soon, the tables turn.  Cassidy will become the hunted.  And only by facing his own inner demons will Diego be able to save her...

Diego is desperately trying to ignore the panic trying to freeze his body in place on the fifty-first floor of the rusting girders and catwalks of a high rise's skeleton when he realizes that someone is shooting tranquilizer darts at him.  As he loses his perch and hangs over the five hundred foot drop, he does not expect a sexy, naked Shifter to save his life...nor does he expect to find the shooter hunting her.  While the shooter gets away without a trace, Cassidy is hauled into Diego's interrogation room where he does what he can to make sure she is treated fairly, which is surprising as Shifters are considered to be far less than human.

Cassidy is surprised by her attraction to the attractive Detective interrogating her--and by his coaching of her answers to allow her to be released without being charged and handed over to the Shifter Division of the Las Vegas PD where her very survival would come into question.  When she is let off with two weeks' restriction to her Shifter town, Cassidy isn't happy--but she knows that it could have been a lot worse.

Diego's captain tasks Diego with checking in on Cassidy daily to ensure she doesn't try to break her "grounding" as it is both of their butts on the line if she gets into trouble after they stuck their necks out for her.  When Diego shows up for his first check in and finds Cassidy has once again left town and is in the same area where the hunter first tracked her, it is an understatement to say he is upset.  When he goes after her, his instincts are proven correct--Cassidy is in trouble.  What is hunting her isn't clear as nothing that Diego is aware of can simply vanish from sight...

As Diego is drawn deeper and deeper into Cassidy's world, first by following orders to check in on her, and later by falling for the attractive and strong woman Cassidy is, his eyes are opened to Shifter rules and rituals.  He finds himself increasingly drawn to Cassidy and the attraction is definitely mutual.  This presents worry on both sides as Diego is embroiled in a vendetta against the men responsible for killing his partner and causing his own fear of heights.  Cassidy is worried that she hasn't mourned her first mate long enough and has a thirst for vengeance against those who murdered him.  When they both get the opportunity for revenge against those who had harmed them, they react in different ways both of which complicate their world and their lives in unpredictable ways.

I was worried when I realized this book would not take place in the same Shifter town as the first two books in the series, but I shouldn't have.  This new Shifter town is wonderful with characters who found a place in my heart just as those in books one and two did.  Cassidy comes from a wonderful family and has friends who would follow her to the ends of the earth to protect her.  Diego's mother and brother are both wonderful and I hope to read more about Xavier in upcoming books.  Eric's book is next and I am looking forward to his story--there were several characters who I hope get plenty of page space in his book while I look forward to how he is going to move forward with the tricky situation presented in Wild Cat.
